Our new publication ‘The Story of Colinton’s Shops – 150 Years of Local Businesses’ is now available to members. The book was written by members of the society.
The book describes the development of Colinton through its retail businesses as the village grew and shops changed to adapt to different social needs. If you know Colinton, you may recognise some old familiar names – Harwell’s, Waddells and Downes – as well as many current ones. However, you may not know some of the entrepreneurs of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries – Jane Johnston and her family; Alex Hutcheson the stationer and photographer; William Rangecroft the fishmonger; Hyslop’s the grocer; and Thomas W Forster Thompson the chemist
Fully illustrated and including a wealth of historical information as well as personal reminiscences, The Story of Colinton’s Shops follows the development of retail properties in the village centre, how this has changed over the years, and the owners past and present who have shaped Colinton’s history. This is a fascinating glimpse into the village’s social history.
