Bonaly: Three Centuries of Rural Line in an Edinburgh Suburb

Our new publication ‘Bonaly: Three Centuries of Rural Life in an Edinburgh Suburb’ is now available to members. The book was written by local historian and member of the society, Robert Henderson.

The book takes the reader back through time to when Bonaly was a small hamlet in the hills above Colinton Village. It explores life in a predominantly rural settlement with its residents heavily dependent on agriculture and related activities. The book looks at the changing occupation of the inhabitants, their housing and lifestyyle and the part played by the Church and the local school on family life.

Although focused on the village of Bonaly, this book explores the changes in agricultural practice, the role of the land owner, and impact of wider social change on the inhabitants of Bonaly. It will appeal to anyone interested in social history.

Bonaly is available to purchase from the Society, from local retailers or on Amazon.
